HISTORY  OF MOUNT  CARMEL  SCHOOL,  AKOLA

          The History of Mount Carmel School, Akola goes long back to 16th July 1977 when Rev. Fr. Norbert  Braganza, the founder of the school opened  Mount  Carmel  English  Pre-Primary  and  Primary  School, Akola  with the permission of His Lordship Rt. Rev. Bishop Joseph Rosario who is also the  Co-founder of the school with the help of Honourable Professor  Shri.  Azar  Hussain, ( ex-minister,  Govt.  of  Maharashtra). The school is affiliated to the State Board of Secondary and Higher Secondary education, Government of Maharashtra. This institution is administered and maintained by the catholic dioceses of Amravati. The school had a very humble beginning  with just 30 students and the minimum of convenience and infrastructure. Rev. Fr. Nobert Braganza strained every nerve to see that the school grows in the right direction in her infancy. This prestigious institution known for quality education and value based discipline is situated  in  a  beautiful  location  in  the  heart  of  the  cotton  city  and  business  centre  and  on  the  banks  of  the  holy  river  Morna. 

In June 1982 Rev. Fr. Cyriac took charge of the school and continued the assiduous efforts with meticulous planning. He  raised  it  as  a  Secondary  School  in  1987, with  the  help  of  Honourable Shri Sudhakarrao Gangane (ex-minister,  Govt.  of  Maharashtra).  His benevolence will always remain cherished in our memory.  

The reign of the growing up school came to Rev. Fr.  George  Varapadavil on 1st October 1989 . The  school has began a new chapter in its long journey towards rapid progress, development, prosperity and excellence. It has excelled consistently both in academics and co-curricular activities. Since 1990 the school has kept a record of cent (hundred) percent results with a larger number of students topping the Divisional Board of Secondary and Higher Secondary Education Amravati with merits, distinctions and highest marks in various subjects. In  S.S.C.  exam  March  2003 one  of  our  students  Master  Sumit  Agrawal  secured  First  Rank  in  Maharashtra  State. 

With  the  permission  of  His  Lordship  Bishop  Edwin  Colaco  and  with  the  help  of  Mr.  Sudhakar  Gangane  M.L.C.   (ex-minister, Govt. of Maharashta)  Rev. Fr. George upgraded  the school  into  a  Junior  College  in  2004. The  first  academic  session  of  Mount  Carmel  Junior  College  of  Science  faculty  with  bifocal  subjects  was  blessed  and  inaugurated  on  the  15th  July,  2004. In the same year  he  also  completed  the  present  School  construction,  the  Silver  Jubilee  Memorial  Multi-purpose  Auditorium  and  the  Junior  College  building on  the  20th  of  July  2004  by  Honourable  Shri.  Surendra  Mohan  Shangari,  Director  General  of  Police,  (Mumbai,   Maharashtra  State ). The Multi –purpose Auditorium with a  beautiful  life  size  statue  of  Our  Lady  of  Mount   Carmel  installed  on  the  pinnacle  of  the  New  Building  has  brought  prestige and added  attraction  to  the  city of  Akola.

The  new  Junior  College  Laboratory  was  blessed  by  His  Lordship  Bishop  Joe  Rosario  and  inaugurated  by  Honourable  Shri.  Vasantrao  Purke,  Minister  for  School  Education,  Youth  Welfare  and  Sports,  Govt.  of  Maharashtra  on  the  26th  of  February,  2005.

After rendering almost a life time service to Mount Carmel School, Akola Rev. Fr. George Varapadavil retired on 30th May 2015. People of Akola will always be indebted to him for his mighty contribution in making  Mount Carmel School what it is today.   

Rev. Fr. Mathew Karickal, the new Principal of the school, took charge of the school on the 1st of June 2015. He got retired on 30th May 2023.

Now the new Principal Rev. Dr. Fr. Joselin Pancras, took charge of the school on the 1st of June 2023.    

The ex-alumni can be found perched in all continents. It is gratifying to note that most of them are well placed in life. Hence the school feels proud when she looks back at the array of students. The school has grown into an institution imparting instruction to some four thousands students with a staff strength of 110, of which some seventy are on teaching and 34 of them are on the non-teaching staff. Now we have the needed infrastructure, trained staff, other facilities. We have a full fledged library with some 10,000 books. The laboratories are well equipped. The computer lab is well furnished and has 30 latest computers (Pentium III & IV) with internet facilities. The school provides School buses for the safety and security of it’s young children.
